September 20, 2009 Vitamin D is an important nutrient for the development of strong bones. However, recent studies are now linking deficiencies of vitamin D with heart disease, cancers and depression. A large percentage of people living in northern regions of the world (above 37° latitude – that means all Canadians and people living in the northern United States) are not getting enough of this vitamin. Since we cannot rely on the sun to synthesis vitamin D from mid-October to mid April, you might want to consider taking a supplement, especially from October to April. Also, if you are over the age of 50, it is recommended that you take a daily supplement. Talk to your doctor, dietitian or pharmacist about how much you should take. |
