November 22, 2009 “Probiotics” are live bacteria that beneficially affect the stomach and intestine. They coat our digestive tracts and may ward off yeast infections, stomach upsets and allergies. These “friendly” bacteria have also help digest lactose in lactose-intolerant people, lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Eating foods high in sugar and taking antibiotics can kill off the good microbes. To help those good bugs flourish, eat probiotic-rich foods like yogurt, kimchi, pickles, miso soup and aged cheese more often. |
